Excavation & Site Work

Scope and approach

Falis Construction can review residential site-work scopes involving excavation, trenching, grading, site preparation and related exterior improvements where the work fits the project and applicable requirements.

Because site work depends heavily on access, drainage, utilities, soil conditions and project purpose, the scope should be reviewed before pricing or scheduling.

What shapes a site work estimate

Access

Whether equipment can reach the work area, and what it has to cross to get there, is often the largest single variable on a residential site.

Soil and water table

Soil type affects bearing, drainage and how excavation has to be handled. A high water table changes the approach entirely.

Utilities

Locating buried services before excavation is a required step, and existing utility runs sometimes constrain where work can go.

Season

Deep frost and spring thaw both restrict what can be done efficiently. Scheduling excavation into a workable window matters more here than in milder regions.

Questions about excavation, grading & site work

Can regrading fix my wet basement?

Frequently, yes, and it is usually the first thing worth trying because it is comparatively inexpensive. Soil should fall away from the foundation for the first several feet. Where it has settled over the years — which is common as backfill consolidates — water collects against the wall and finds its way in. Correcting grade and moving roof discharge away often resolves the problem without touching the interior.

Below frost depth as a minimum, and further for a full basement. Minnesota frost depth is set locally and is meaningfully deeper than in most of the country, which is one reason foundation work here costs what it does.

Utility locating is a required step before any excavation and is part of the process. Existing buried services sometimes constrain where work can happen, which is another reason the project address matters at estimate stage.

Some of it, with additional cost and effort — frozen ground is slow to excavate and backfill behaves differently. Spring thaw brings the opposite problem, with sites too soft to support equipment without damage. Where a project allows scheduling flexibility, planning site work into a suitable window saves both money and mess.
