Hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and tile — installation, replacement and the subfloor work underneath.
New flooring can change the look and function of a space, whether the project involves one room or several areas of the home. Falis Construction works with hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate, tile and related finish scopes where offered.
The project may also include removal of existing finishes, subfloor preparation, baseboards, transitions and coordination with adjacent remodeling work.
Subfloor condition and flatness determine both the preparation cost and whether the finished floor performs. Leveling is common and worth budgeting for rather than discovering.
Tear-out varies enormously. Floating floors lift quickly; glued-down vinyl or mortared tile do not, and older adhesives sometimes bring their own handling considerations.
Basements bring moisture considerations that rule out some materials and make others — engineered wood, LVP, tile — the sensible choice. Solid hardwood below grade is generally the wrong answer here.
In a climate with humidity swings this large, letting material acclimate and detailing the expansion gap correctly is what stops a floor cupping, gapping or buckling a season later.
Solid hardwood below grade is generally not advisable, because concrete transmits moisture and wood responds to it. Engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank and tile are all designed for that environment and are what we would normally recommend. If the look of real wood matters, engineered flooring gets you a genuine wood wear layer over a dimensionally stable core.
Yes, and it is worth flagging as a line item because it varies so much. Removing a floating laminate is quick. Removing glued vinyl or mortar-set tile is labor-intensive, and it is the stage most likely to reveal a subfloor problem that needs correcting before anything new goes down.
You can, and many homeowners do. Tell us on the estimate form whether material is already selected, purchased or still being chosen — it changes the quote and the schedule. The one caution is quantity: ordering without enough overage for cuts and future repairs is a common and avoidable problem, particularly with dye-lot-sensitive products.
Flatter than most people assume, and the tolerance differs by material — large-format tile is the least forgiving, since a floor that is out of plane produces lippage between tiles and stresses the grout. We assess it before installation rather than discovering it partway through.
Because heated indoor air in a Minnesota winter is extremely dry and wood loses moisture and shrinks. Some seasonal movement in a solid wood floor is normal and reverses in summer. Excessive gapping usually points to installation moisture content, inadequate acclimation, or indoor humidity running well outside a reasonable range.
